Woman trafficked, raped; husband among seven arrested

(PTI) PALANPUR (Gujarat), May 26: A man and six others were arrested in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district for allegedly trafficking his wife for Rs 50,000, after which she was reportedly raped and sexually assaulted. The heinous crime came to light during an investigation into a missing person complaint filed by the husband earlier this month. The accused had lodged a complaint on May 11 claiming that his wife had gone missing from Palanpur city. Within two days of the complaint, the husband himself went missing, following which his father filed another missing person complaint. This sequence of events raised suspicion. Cops subsequently traced the husband and later located his wife, whose formal statement exposed the alleged crime. It was revealed that the husband had allegedly sold his wife to his friends for Rs 50,000.

Tripura HC acquits 2 persons sentenced to life for murder

(PTI)AGARTALA, May 26: A division bench of the Tripura High Court on Tuesday acquitted two persons, who were sentenced by a lower court to life term imprisonment for murdering a bank manager in 2019. Bodhisatwa Das, the then branch manager of a nationalised bank in North Tripura, was stabbed to death on August 3, 2019, following a brawl between the bank official and four persons, who were having a drinking session on the roadside. The District and Session court, West Tripura, found the four persons – Sumit Chowdhury, Sumit Banik, Sukanta Biswas and Omar Sharif – guilty and sentenced them to life term rigorous imprisonment in 2023. Challenging the lower court’s order, Sumit Chowdhury and Sumit Banik had approached the High Court of Tripura seeking reversal of the life sentence. “The division bench headed by Justice T Amarnath Goud on Tuesday acquitted both petitioners of the murder charge on the ground that the provision of common intention for the crime did not match this particular incident,” senior advocate Subrata Sarkar told reporters after the verdict. The high court rejected the review petition of Omar Sharif earlier, Sunakta Das has not yet approached the high court challenging the lower court’s verdict.

NONGPOH, May 26: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District unit on Tuesday welcomed the progress of several long-pending infrastructure projects along National Highway-6 in Ri-Bhoi.

A KSU delegation met with Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal to review the status of demands including the construction of foot overbridges (FOBs), road repairs, and the installation of streetlights. The union noted that these safety measures had remained unresolved for several years.

KSU district president Ferdynald Kharkamni told media persons that the construction of foot overbridges is gaining momentum at key locations, including Nongpoh, Umsning, Byrnihat, Arphewmer, and Mawlein-Mawkhan. He also confirmed that streetlight installation has commenced in Nongpoh town, with the remaining sections expected to be completed soon.

“Owing to the proactive approach of the Deputy Commissioner, these projects are finally moving forward,” Kharkamni said. He added that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has repaired most of the damaged stretches along the highway, providing relief to commuters.

The union further suggested that the NHAI should bear the electricity costs for the new streetlights while the highway remains under its jurisdiction. According to Kharkamni, approximately 40 per cent of the union’s infrastructure demands have been fulfilled.

As a gesture of appreciation, the union—led by Kharkamni and District Secretary James Hitler Mawphniang—felicitated Baranwal with a traditional Ryndia muffler and a memento. The delegation also extended its best wishes to the Deputy Commissioner as he prepares to take charge of the East Khasi Hills district.
