SHILLONG, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased Meghalaya’s rich agricultural heritage on the global stage by gifting the state’s famed GI-tagged pineapples to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his recent visit to the West Asian nation.

Meghalaya’s pineapples, known worldwide for their exceptional sweetness, rich aroma and low acidity, were among several culturally significant gifts presented by the Prime Minister as part of India’s diplomatic outreach.

The pineapples are grown in the pristine hilly terrains of Meghalaya and are regarded as some of the finest varieties in the world. Besides their unique taste, the pineapples are also valued for their nutritional benefits. They contain high levels of bromelain, an enzyme known to aid digestion and reduce inflammation, and are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Reports stated that PM Modi gifted the UAE President a combination of Meghalaya pineapples, Gujarat’s GI-tagged Kesar mangoes and a traditional Rogan painting from Kutch.

“The presentation of Meghalaya’s pineapples on such a prestigious international platform is a matter of pride for the state and its farmers,” an official said, adding that the gesture also highlighted India’s efforts to promote indigenous and GI-tagged products from the Northeast through diplomatic and cultural engagements.
