Cabinet approves standardised name boards for official vehicles

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, May 27: The state cabinet has approved regulations governing the use of name boards on official government vehicles.

Following an earlier SOP aimed at curbing “VIP culture” by regulating sirens and lights, the Transport Department has now standardised the format for name boards and identified the specific designations authorised to display them.

The guidelines apply to officials in the government, judiciary, administration, and select statutory positions.

“This step will ensure greater clarity, consistency, and discipline in the use of official vehicles across the state,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said.

In a separate decision, the cabinet approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Forest Authority Act, 1991, to strengthen coordination between the State Forest Department and the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs).

The administrative amendment enables the Authority to utilise funds for daily operations, improving monitoring and collaboration for better forest governance and conservation. Although minor, the government stated the amendment is necessary to ensure the Authority functions effectively.

Transport tax penalties

The Cabinet has also approved a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme to waive and reduce penalties related to Motor Vehicles Tax, Passenger and Goods Tax, and fitness fees.

The Chief Minister said commercial vehicles in the state have accumulated dues exceeding Rs 900 crore. While basic fees remain modest, cumulative penalties have created significant financial stress for local transporters.

To provide relief, the government has decided to grant a 90% exemption on penalties for pending fitness certificates and an 80% exemption on pending Motor Vehicle Tax and Goods & Passenger Tax.

The settlement scheme will remain valid until August 31, 2026. It is intended to ease the financial burden on transporters, help them regularise their documents, and ensure better tax compliance moving forward.

Police clarify FIR status in Chibinang vandalism case

(No subheading available)

From Our Correspondent

TURA, May 27: The West Garo Hills Police has issued a clarification regarding the registration of cases linked to the vandalism at Chibinang on March 9.

According to Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma, a joint FIR was lodged on March 18 by the GSU Chibinang and Phulbari regional units against former Phulbari MLA SG Esmatur Mominin. The complaint alleged criminal offences, including the vandalization of the GSU office and a statue at Chibinang Bazar.

Based on this FIR, Phulbari PS Case No. 12/2026 was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act. Police confirmed that the accused have been arrested and the investigation is under way.

They further noted that on April 14, another complaint regarding the same incident was received from Bernard N Marak. This complaint was forwarded to Phulbari Police Station for action. However, as both complaints relate to the same incident and facts, Marak’s complaint has been treated as supplementary to the original case.

Citing the Supreme Court judgment in TT Antony Vs State of Kerala & Others (2001), the district police stated that multiple FIRs can- not be registered for the same occurrence. Any subsequent information must instead form part of the investigation in the original case.

The police added that ac- tion will be taken against those involved based on evidence collected. The clarification was issued to resolve public confusion regarding the han- dling of multiple complaints.

Mukul slams illegal stone mining, infrastructure neglect in Songsak

From Our Correspondent

TURA, May 27: Leader of the Opposition and Songsak MLA Mukul Sangma on Monday inspected the de-teriorating road connecting Songsak to Mendipathar, including a weak bridge at Songkama Rongdal, which has been damaged by over-loaded heavy trucks.

Accompanied by district officials, Sangma expressed concern over the unsafe bridge, which is restricted to vehicles under 9 tonne. During the inspection, he stopped a heavy truck vio-lating the limit and directed Assistant Commissioner K Shullai to take strict ac-tion against the driver and operators endangering the structure. He further called for the immediate repair of the route.

The Opposition leader also raised alarms over NH-127B road widening works being executed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Develop-ment Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). He alleged that excavation was being car-ried out beyond permissible limits and that stone was being illegally extracted and transported through Dobedare road.

While a stone crusher on-site was non-operational during the visit, local work-ers reportedly admitted that extraction and transporta-tion continue throughout the week, except on Sundays and market days. Sangma directed officials to halt all illegal activities and initiate stringent action against those involved.

Additionally, Sangma inspected the PMGSY road connecting Songsak to Barikgre, where he uncov-ered a discrepancy between official records and ground reality.

Despite the department submitting a completion report, the MLA found portions of the work still pending.

Contractors present at the site allegedly admitted the project was incom-plete.

Sangma further observed that sections of the road had already suffered damage within a month of construc-tion.

He urged the depart-ment to ensure the timely completion of drainage and remaining works while addressing the mismatch between physical progress and reported data.

Local-level concerns, alignment dispute delay border fencing work

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, May 27: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said that local-level concerns and alignment disputes are delaying the completion of the Indo-Bangladesh border fencing in Meghalaya, though over 90% of the work is already finished.

Responding to queries on border security, Sangma noted that Meghalaya has progressed faster than several other border states.

Out of the state’s roughly 440-kilometre international boundary, nearly 400 kilometres have been fenced, with only 40 to 45 kilometres remaining.

The chief minister attributed the delay to “genuine issues” raised by border communities, particularly where the proposed alignment passes several kilometres inside the actual border, cutting through villages and agricultural land.

“In some locations, the fencing line comes two to five kilometres inward, which is a sensitive matter for residents,” Sangma said.

He stated that the government is currently holding discussions with local communities to resolve these grievances while pushing for the project’s completion. Despite the pending stretches, Sangma emphasised that Meghalaya remains significantly ahead of other states in securing its border and expressed hope for a swift resolution.
